Brentford have confirmed the signing of Jannik Schuster from RB Salzburg for £17million, subject to international clearance. The 19-year-old centre-back has penned a contract in west London until June 2031, with the option of a one-year extension. Schuster becomes the most expensive Austrian player in the history of the Austrian Bundesliga, with Brentford fighting off interest from a number of European clubs for his signature. Standard Sport understands that Schuster chose to move to Brentford due to the club’s reputation for developing young players. The Bees have also offered assurances to Schuster regarding a clear pathway through to the first team. Highly-regarded for his leadership qualities, Schuster’s mobility and speed should make him a good fit for Brentford’s high-intensity style. The Austrian Under-21 international is also renowned for his aerial ability and has established himself as a first-team regular in Salzburg’s defence, making 29 appearances across all competitions this season. Brentford head coach Keith Andrews said: “I’m really delighted that we were able to get Jannik on board. He’s already played a lot of games for Salzburg at a high level. He’s a player with a lot of potential, and we see that as something we can develop.” Andrews added that Schuster is determined to maximise his potential and will fit in well with the first-team squad. With two games to play, Brentford currently sit eighth in the Premier League table, two points outside of the European places. The signing of Schuster is a significant coup for the club, and his arrival will be a major boost as they prepare for the possibility of playing European football next season.
