Brentford's pursuit of Norwegian winger Antonio Nusa collapsed in January 2024 after a medical issue was identified during his assessment. The Premier League club had agreed a deal with Club Brugge, reportedly worth an initial £25 million, and had contacted the player to offer a clear path to first-team football. However, the club ultimately withdrew from the deal following the medical examination.
The specific problem was flagged during Nusa's comprehensive medical assessment with Brentford's medical staff. In response, subsequent and more detailed tests were conducted by the Norwegian Football Federation's medical team, led by their chief medical officer, doctor Ola Sand. These later examinations cleared the player of any significant issue. Doctor Sand judged that the initial findings from the Brentford medical did not cause any functional problems or symptoms for Nusa and definitively ruled him ready for full training and matches. Crucially, by the time these clarifying tests from the national federation were completed and the all-clear was given, the January transfer window had already closed, preventing the deal from being revived.
Nusa, who was 18 at the time of the failed transfer and is now 21, ultimately joined German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the summer of 2024. He has since established himself there, playing over 5,000 minutes across all competitions. At the time of the Brentford interest, his representatives reportedly held reservations, feeling a direct move to a larger Premier League club might have been too significant a step in his early development, preferring a more gradual pathway.
This context also surrounded interest from Tottenham Hotspur. Then managed by Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham had also shown serious interest in signing Nusa in a deal valued around £25 million. However, they could not guarantee the young winger the regular playing opportunities he sought, which was a key factor in their proposed move also failing to materialise during that same window.
Speaking recently about his future amid continued speculation, Nusa indicated he is settled at his current club. "Honestly, I'm not thinking about that at the moment," he said. "I'm very happy here at RB Leipzig. My job is to play good football." He has a long-term contract with the German side, which runs until June 2029.
The story has resurfaced as Brentford enjoy a strong start to the current Premier League campaign. Thomas Frank's team sits fourth in the table with nine points from their opening five games. Their impressive recent form includes a notable 3-0 victory over Chelsea and an ongoing unbeaten run. The squad will look to continue this momentum in their next match, an away trip to face Aston Villa on 10 October.
