Brentford have completed the signing of 18-year-old Cork City defender Donal O'Connor for €170,000, further strengthening their Irish contingent under manager Keith Andrews. The teenager joins Ireland captain Nathan Collins and goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher at the Premier League club, which finished 9th last season with 53 points (14W-11D-13L).

Who is Donal O'Connor?

The 18-year-old centre-back began his career at Avondale United before making his senior debut for Cork City in May. He impressed immediately, helping the Rebels keep six clean sheets in his first seven appearances. O'Connor recently completed his Leaving Cert exams and was named in a League of Ireland squad last year.

Why Brentford?

Andrews' side has become a hub for Irish talent, with former Ireland teammate Damien Duff now part of the coaching staff. The manager has built a squad capable of pushing for European qualification, despite losing key attackers last season. O'Connor will benefit from mentorship from Collins and Kelleher, both established Premier League stars.

What's next for O'Connor?

The defender is expected to join Brentford before the Premier League season begins. His first potential appearance could come in the away fixture against Crystal Palace on February 10, 2027, as the Bees look to improve on last season's 9th-place finish. With a goal difference of +3 (55 scored, 52 conceded), Brentford will hope O'Connor can bolster their defensive solidity.
