Brentford’s attempt to sign Koln teenager El Mala ended in chaos on deadline day after his mother, his primary adviser, refused final approval. The collapse left Brentford empty-handed despite agreeing a €45m package plus €5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause with Koln.

What went wrong for Brentford?

Koln had already shaken hands on a deal with Brentford worth up to €50m in total. The clubs finalised terms late last season, but El Mala’s mother pulled the plug just before Brentford’s deadline expired. Koln sporting director Thomas Kessler had earlier admitted talks were “in that ballpark,” yet the family’s last-minute veto scuppered the move.

League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 9th in Premier League, 53 pts, 14W-11D-13L from 38 games, recent form DDLWL. Brentford’s attack managed 55 goals last term, while their defence shipped 52, leaving them three clear of the drop.

Why Dortmund’s €42m offer stings

Borussia Dortmund have now entered the chase with a €42m bid that has left Koln fuming. The Bundesliga side’s lowball offer has riled Koln, who insist El Mala is worth at least what Brentford had tabled. Head coach Rene Wagner insisted the speculation hasn’t distracted the 19-year-old, telling Sky Sport: “He presents himself as an FC [Koln] player every day and doesn’t give any player or staff member the feeling his mind is elsewhere.”

Wagner added: “We’re adults and can be open with each other. Of course we talked about the interest from some clubs over the summer. But right now Said is here on the training pitch. And he’ll be for the next few weeks.” The lad doesn’t give the impression anything else is on his mind. And if something comes up, we can sit down and talk.”

What’s next for El Mala?

Dortmund remain interested, and Koln stand firm on their valuation. The 19-year-old attacker has yet to make a senior appearance for Koln, but his stock keeps rising. With Brentford’s route closed and Dortmund circling, the power shift is clear. Koln will now weigh their options, while El Mala’s camp ponders their next move.
